mud is a wonderful medium

piece of paper found on the street, troy, ny. feb. 2007. the other side has cursive writing lessons done by a young child.
this image is a kind of preface to my new book
John Cage describes his music as, “Purposeless play –this play is an affirmation of life–not an attempt to bring order out of chaos nor to suggest improvement in creation. But simply to work up the very life we are living, which is so excellent once one gets one’s mind and desires out of the way and lets it act of its own accord.”

It’s wonderful how intentional this mud picture looks, when put in another context.
On the ground – muddy piece of paper = trash.
On your blog or on the wall – muddy piece of paper = art.
It looks like the sort of surfaces Eric Carle uses in his collages.

Keri,
THis is so right on!
I wanted to let you know I gave your Tear it up Journal, to my 44 year old friend who was in hospital for the final stem cell transplant treatment for breast cancer.
She said it was the only thing that pulled her out of the suffering and brought her back to the magic of girlhood, free creation and fun.
I just wanted you to know this.

Ah yes, Mr. Cage always says it so well, and so clearly, that he makes it sounds easy.

Hi Kari,
I was looking up John Cage in the library. Do you have any favorite book of him? What do you recommend?

Hi Keri,I’ve been doing a ton of research on arts education collaborators…do you do much artist educator work, or solely publication? Great imagination!
