I received an email from Chuck Duffie who recently completed an exercise from How to be an Explorer of the World with his two daughters. The exercise involves photographing the cracks in the sidewalk. I am so in love with what they did with it! They printed out the collage and framed it for their wall. Brilliant!

This exercise really helped my daughters see the world in a new way. As they snapped away, they talked about the sidewalk cracks like works of art, using words like “interesting” and “beautiful” to talk about cement! After about 15 minutes, they turned their cameras on bushes, then trees and, finally, pointed their cameras straight up and started snapping pics of the sky. They had a great time!

Hello, Keri
I found an artist who talks about having her rules to break the rules. She is young and full of life.
If you have computer play time, consider visiting:
Oregon Art Beat. Type Jennifer Mercede into the search box.
She is so you.
Enjoy your first year as a college professor. I root for you from the side lines of an older middle-age woman.

I am going to be going to be doing my practicum as a student teacher in November and I am going to try to use this somehow in my lesson planning. Thank-you!

I love the way kids just “get it”, the way they seem to be born knowing that of course the cracks in the cement are cool…and don’t forget the sky! Sweet share. Thanks!

Concrete should be part of every foundation course. (Followed by a damp-proof course).
This really cracked me up.

I love that the result is so gorgeous – I spent a lot of time looking at each photo and then going outside and looking at my sidewalk. Beautiful.

A friend just sent me this collection to go with my own shots of sidewalk patterns. Our town is full of such gems and it’s fun to see that others appreciate them as well.
