This series is great. But I do have to say this is one of my favorites!
(I am also partial to the map, being a geographer/cartographer by trade).

i love them all and this one is my fave thus far. my hub and i already leave messages for each other in the cereal boxes. but to be able to add "born on" dates etc is beyond clever.

I just love this idea! I could totally get behind creating new packaging for the products in my home...The chalk paint is brilliant. And why not have personalized toothpaste, or change that perscription pill label to read "sugar pills" instead of prozac...Change that chardonnay bottle to 'purified water from france or somewhere' or ... ah, endless possibilities!

You know it's an interesting debate - because is branding much more than putting one's 'mark' on something? Along the line with whatever purchase a person has made it has been given a mark to denote its origins - if we reclaim our products with our own 'mark' perhaps it feels like reclaiming its space but on a small scale its (c) insert your name here.
Regardless, I like what you're doing. It's incredibly beautiful like all your work. The next best thing would probably be manufacturing the whole shebang..

Here are my thoughts on this:
I would agree that what i am doing is a form of "rebranding" IF 1. I was selling them, and/or 2. if it was my intent to present them as products, (i.e. cover your products with the keri smith version instead.)

in my opinion the concept of branding is directly linked with the intent of the creator, (i.e. wanting to label a product so as to make it a known commodity.) In this case my intent is only to share these ideas as a concept. I am sharing my ideas both as a political statement (questioning consumerist culture), and also as a way of demonstrating an alternative to that. I am intending this as a means for others to think about the space that brands and logos occupy in their own lives.

in my opinion this is not a form of branding.

I would like people to keep in mind that this series of works are part of create a thing a day month. They are created in the spirit of experimentation and investigation, and in most cases done in 20 minutes or less a day, (though a couple took longer than this). I am hoping to push myself into some new and interesting places with it, and I want to allow my ideas/thoughts to grow and expand as I go.

Hi Keri - I've been popping in every so often so see the progress of your 'create a thing a month' month. Covering commercial products was an interesting choice! But I keep thinking it's like doing the job twice. While I agree with your position on ad-free sites and living a life free from the thumb of commercialism, I sometimes wonder if your designs are, if not for yourself then for others, just a form of rebranding?

i really love this idea. i have a coffee mug with chalkboard surface and i write something on it before bed every morning so i have something nice to wake up to.
