Unbranding theme:
Who needs children's toys when you can just cover up your household goods with these handy skins?
hours of fun.
Posted by kerismith at February 10, 2007 03:50 PMOh those are so great! What a way to make a smile appear when its nothing but ice coming down outside. Thanks Keri...keep providing eye candy!
Posted by: Vicki on February 13, 2007 05:38 PMLove these characters.
Posted by: patricia on February 13, 2007 06:58 AMoh dear ... shamefacedly admits I LOVE packaging... and often keep prized samples for long after I should....
Posted by: m on February 12, 2007 06:33 AMThe family and characters are so wonderful. I may just have to go around covering up all my household goods...
Posted by: chickengirl on February 11, 2007 08:22 PMI wasn't sure about this at first (and I too might argue that this isn't really truly unbranding) but I LOVE LOVE LOVE this, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE these little characters!
They've got such great shapes, and wonderful textures and perfect little rosy cheeks. Very Mary Blair-ish (who just happens to be my absolute favourite illustrator these days).
I'm definitely gonna start doing this with some of my stuff soon (I even have some lazer print sticker paper lying around that would work perfectly)
Hi Keri
I look forward to logging on everyday to see what you have created - what a great February! I love the unbranding skins - especially this charming French family, and all of last week's projects too.
an interesting point you bring up Ymke. i think it depends on what your definition of "branding" is. my concept of unbranding involves pulling my personal space out of the corporate grasp and shaping it to conform to my own mindset/aesthetic (nature for example).
my intent is not to sell or promote these as a product for others, but instead use it as a personal statement and investigation. if I was saying to people 'use these skins made by keri smith', then I might agree that it is "rebranding". what I am considering here is the idea of taking the power back with regards to products in your own home. think of it more as a gallery exhibit of my experiments.
i am hoping people might explore the concept in their own way.
Posted by: keri smith on February 11, 2007 11:11 AMStill I'm not convinced you should call this unbranding...
What ever you'll do, what other direction you'll take doesn't matter, in my opinion it's more something like rebranding.
Done in a cute Keri Smith way though ;)
I like your 'bathroom' skins!
My favourite yet! Wonderful characters. :o)
Posted by: Lucia on February 11, 2007 10:07 AMWe did the same thing for Christmas this past year as a family project. It was a lot of fun! I first got wind of this kind of labeling when I worked for Greenpeace. It's educational and creative, and gives you lots of philosophy to explore too! How many of us are label readers, ingredient investigaters... alternate marketing is awesome! I've even seen it done as an exhibit at an art museum. Cheers to alternate perspectives and creativity!
Posted by: Earthlight on February 11, 2007 09:55 AMI would love to put these in my bathroom. Where can I get waterproof paper? I'm quite messy in the bathroom...
Posted by: Emily on February 11, 2007 07:18 AMoh my god, hilarious and cool!you really have a lot of time on your hands! love it!
Posted by: leslie on February 11, 2007 12:31 AMGaston Leroux?! He's the author of the Phantom of the Opera :)
I wish the boulangerie in Montmartre I used to go had such cute owners ! I love the idea!
Posted by: del4yo on February 10, 2007 10:01 PMEach day you create another amazing surprise, but this one is my favorite to date. I have books and books of fabric samples, hmmmmmmmmm.
Posted by: Lindsay on February 10, 2007 09:51 PMThis is seriously the coolest thing ever.
Posted by: Jessica Poundstone on February 10, 2007 08:58 PMThis is seriously the coolest thing ever.
Posted by: Jessica Poundstone on February 10, 2007 08:58 PMI'm thoroughly enjoying your unbranding!
Posted by: Stephanie on February 10, 2007 08:13 PMi love this idea. but i'd be afraid that paper labels living in the bathroom would get kind of wrecked after awhile, what with all the water and splashing? maybe not?
Posted by: kat f. on February 10, 2007 05:59 PMTerrific idea - there's absolutely no reason why every product in the house shouldn't be personally designed. Or arted up period! Can't wait to see what comes next.
Posted by: kiri on February 10, 2007 05:03 PMawesome!
