My theme for this week is unbranding. While I do actually enjoy the packaging of some products, I find most items to be visually draining and lacking restraint. I wanted to consider what my house might look like with no visable brand names on packaging. This got me thinking of various methods to have products blend into my environment in a fluid way, either by simulating something that I find aesthetically pleasing, or by somehow integrating them into my psyche (ie. making them practical or necessary.) I came up with the idea to create product "skins" that mask the identity of the product. I am creating a series of downloadble pdf's playing with the concept. This is the first test.
i'm not sure if it is successful but am enjoying the process.
Posted by kerismith at February 08, 2007 03:14 PMI love this idea! I know what I'll be doing this weekend. :-)
Posted by: Christina on February 14, 2007 08:14 AMI tried this a few years back by buying a lot of non-branded containers and transferring contents. It ended up being too much work, so in our new place, I was sure to build a big pantry where I banish all the branded items. They can sit in there in the cold dark for all I care. Only the containers of pasta and rice and bowls of fruit are allowed the fresh air of the kitchen. Some day the branded items will learn and shed their corporate posturing.
Posted by: paul on February 13, 2007 08:56 PMExcellent idea and you've done it so well too! Must look into this myself!
Posted by: Crafty Green Poet on February 12, 2007 04:30 AMwhat a marvelous idea! Brilliant!
Posted by: Alice on February 10, 2007 05:26 AMHow wonderfully creative and political at the same time. I am so glad that I found your blog!
Posted by: Margaret on February 10, 2007 02:08 AMYou never fail to make me think. Thanks for the constant inspiration!
Posted by: Ani on February 9, 2007 02:42 PMthat is just dang darn smart.
Posted by: marya on February 9, 2007 12:10 PMYou have this talent of stripping something down so that it's almost raw in a sense & I love that about your work.
BTW I keep your book on my office desk and pick it up for inspiration. Thank you, keep it up.
Posted by: Kathy on February 9, 2007 11:27 AMHave you heard of Burning Man? A community of 30,000 people in the desert of Nevada for a week. Branding is highly discouraged to the point that people cover up the logos on their trucks and RV's before they drive in. Of course, you need some real creativity to cover logos that are 3-5 ft high.
Posted by: Cathy on February 9, 2007 11:12 AMCool idea! When considering it at first, I found it enticing. Then the controlling, information seeking part of me gasped at not being able to read the nutritional labels on my food! YIKES! I'm sure that reveals that I'm way to obsessed/attached to what I eat. Oh the bliss of being able to return to the days where I didn't care and it didn't matter!
Thanks for sharing your unique, creative inspirations with us :-)
I've seen simular ideas like this, I really like it.
But when you think of it, it's almost like you create a brand yourself again as well. I can imagine it will create more rest. At least you'll look at something you probably like and in the end you can change it again when you're bored or finished with it.Curious about the final conclusion from your 'investigation'.
Good luck!
great idea... really. I would buy them...what about "skins" for girl products.... teengirls would LOVE them, esp.if they have brothers sharing a bathroom with them...and skins for girlscout cookies, that look like veggies:) WOW that a great gal you are!
Posted by: beth on February 9, 2007 12:04 AMI had a friend who served 10 years in a maximum security jail. He did 22 hours a day in his cell. The labels on his food tins used to drive him crazy, so he would painstakingly remove each one, leaving a pristine row of plain silver.
He continued to do this for years after he got out, when we lived together. The food shelves used to look beautiful, but I confess I had a terrible time working out what was in what, and never knew what I was going to get when I opened a sealed tin - pineapple, tomatoes, anything was possible.
I just got hold of your book, Living Out Loud.
It's WONDERFUL.
Posted by: shula on February 8, 2007 11:28 PMGood idea Keri. You can also just use solid (skin) colors.
Take more photos of them brands in their new skin.
There is this parade at Green Lake, Wa (can't recall the name), where to watch it, you can only where shirts with no logos of any kind.
Posted by: brand 'em' on February 8, 2007 11:26 PMCereal, pasta and lots more foods at my house get poured into half-gallon glass jars. I find the foods much more interesting than the boxes.
Posted by: Dawn on February 8, 2007 10:41 PMEver since they started making these nice peel-off labels, whenever I buy something, I just peel off the label. They usually come off quite easily. I did this yesterday with cheap White Rain conditioner. Now I can enjoy the beautiful lime green color on a nicely shaped bottle.
I'm enjoying your projects and have made about 20 collages with just sticky things. So fun and easy. Thanks Keri!
Posted by: Sarah on February 8, 2007 09:34 PMBrilliant! I can see a whole revolution now. How wonderfully calming to open your cupboards and see nothing but serene beautiful photos. When you're ready, I want to share it with all my blog readers too. Everyone needs to know about this idea.
Posted by: Cathy on February 8, 2007 07:54 PMYou're a genius! Your cereal box is so soothing! I think this is a fantastic idea...
also, I'm getting into knitting lately, and it got me thinking that I could knit some slipcovers for round things, like cans and jars and bottles...

Posted by: Helen on February 8, 2007 07:19 PMThat's so funny. I was just thinking that as I was in the bath, I wonder what the world was like before there were name brands all over every surface that your eyes skim. I wondered what it might have felt like to not have theme songs and commercials and slogans bombarding the brain 24/7.
Posted by: Veronica on February 8, 2007 05:36 PMKeri, your brain is so prolific and beautiful, love all your ideas :)
Posted by: Geninne on February 8, 2007 04:48 PMhey, what a great idea. and specially the new cover you chose for the cereal box.
Posted by: ksklein on February 8, 2007 04:38 PMKeri, you're reading my mind. We're releasing a project of product "sleeves" on the Anti-Advertising Agency site this weekend. Not the same as yours, but keep an eye out.
Posted by: Steve Lambert on February 8, 2007 04:32 PMI can't tell you how much I love this. Hugely inspirational, as always.
Posted by: Megan on February 8, 2007 04:13 PMokay, so i love this idea! i'm all about de-branding lately, and have started to do so with my clothing. i hadn't thought to take it to this level, but i love it!
you'll have to let me know when/if you make the pdf patterns available online so i can snap them up!
