some things to do instead of shopping

1. Decorate a tree in public. In a park, on a street, outside your workplace, places you would least expect it.

2. Leave tiny anonymous gifts with notes that say "something for you".

3. Put fortunes written on paper into people's pockets when you go to parties.

4. Write letters telling people you admire them and that you're greatful for their existence.

5. Buy a tree for someone else.

6. Write peaceful quotes in public places with chalk.

7. Guerilla carolling...Sing x-mas carols on people answering machines.

8. Plant some bulbs in pots, place them in locations that could use some life.

9. If you live in a snowy climate write large notes in the snow on people's front lawns (when they are out). If you live in a warm climate you can hang greetings in the trees.

10. Make a treasure map of the best x-mas lights in your town. Hand it out so people can do a tour.

got some more? share them here...

In mid-January, when the snow (hopefully) returns, shovel your neighbour's sidewalk without saying a word.

Wonderful, original, I enjoy checking in everyday! What to do instead of Christmas shopping? Take a favorie photo, have it copied and enlarged, then cut it into a puzzle. Put all the pieces in a small box, with a copy of the orginial pasted to the top. Thank you for sharing your delightful blog with me! Sweet holidays, Corey

last night i started singing christmas carols in the laundromat with my neighbor kids, it made everyone smile and it turned into a giant laundromat sing along!!! we liked it so much, we did it on the city bus on the way home, too. one lady started crying and smiling and singing along with us, she said she missed being in the choir and had had a stroke and dropped out because she thought her voice sounded bad now, but felt inspired to go back to church singing again because if we could sing badly with joy and enthusiasm, so could she! ha ha a slight backhanded compliment, but so worth it! it made the kids laugh alot!

Not very Christmasssy, but I feed other people's parking metres that are about to expire. Once I did it as a metre maid was approaching. Victory!

I figure the karma is good for preventing getting parking tickets of my own. ;)

Since I come from a tropical country, snow is always something that I like to see more. I'll draw smiley face on the snow on any front/rear car bonnet. You can see a photo at the following link: http://static.flickr.com/31/62982956_5f5c42da8b.jpg

Hi Keri and all the readers,

I wish you very happy Holidays as well!!!! I come here often and I do like your blog very much!!!

We were going to buy a Christmas tree at one of the stands just around the corner (I live in the middle of Berlin, Germany), but my hubby ran into some of our friends on Saturday and they said they were going to the woods to cut their own tree, if we wanted to join them....so we went with them and had a wonderful time in the woods getting our own real christmas tree.... they had hot snacks and drinks there and a huge fire and the kids loved it and we did, too..... !!! That was so wonderful....;-)

Greetings
Anke

a very merry christmas to you keri and all that read your wonderful journal.

I've been meaning to recruit (poor choice of wording) our boys to build a snowman on the border between our neighbor's property and our own, in the woods along their driveway. This just reminded me that, next big snowfall, we need to actually do it.

One of my favorite ones is to put a hot cup of coffee or cocoa and fresh out of the oven cookies on a plate for the mailman if I happen to have it all happening at the right time. Great list!

I LOVE this list! I am going to do some of these this weekend. :)

I love this!!

Play a 'Famous Christmas Quotes' game with friends and family. See if people can recognize well-known lines and songs from treasured Christmas movies and animated cartoons. For example:

"Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?"

Where's that one from?

This may sound trite, but wear a smile when you go out. A smile is a pretty inexpensive gift, and it's amazing how quickly one's mood can change when someone smiles at you.

I am one of those people who visit your site weekly and never comment. I just wanted you to know you make me smile so often, and I love your outlook on life... etc... Thanks for putting yourself out there!

fabulous ideas! ♥

Posted by: joleen on December 20, 2005 07:31 PM

These are all great suggestions!

It reminds me of the person that leaves the valuable coins annonymously in the Salvation Army Kettles each year.

I'd warn anyone (at least in the U.S.) who's planning on doing guerilla caroling to make sure the person you are calling celebrates Christmas, or you might be more irritating than delightful. I wouldn't mind, though!

!!#5 was done for me this year!! Sorta...we normally purchase real trees...couldn't afford it this year and it was fine by the kids (all teens now and not up to the hunt for a tree any longer). I mentioned to my mother how it seemed so odd that they didn't mind it at all (speaking as a proud mom that they weren't hung up on that part of the tradition) but admitted that even with the rest of the decorations that I would miss it a little. She sent over her fake-tree...which promptly broke within a day (old) so I thought we'd do without. My father heard about it, went out and purchased a beautiful fake tree (prelit) and ... again, instead of putting it up in their own home (where we will be having Christmas, by the way) he brought it over for my living room. I thought that was sweet.

Yes yes!

Public snowpeople! one of my favourite things.

how could i miss that?

(maybe because i am looking out at green green grass. there is a narcissus blooming and a rose about to open.)

Posted by: keri Smith on December 20, 2005 12:37 PM

Angel on the doorstep...make some cookies, put some in a cute little package, put them on the doorstep of your neighbor's house, ring the bell...

AND RUN!

(fun for all ages!)

ps...THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THESE RAK's!!! It lifted my soul to read it...now I'm gonna do some!

Posted by: Felecia Krech on December 20, 2005 12:26 PM

i live in the midwest, and my favorite thing is to build random snowpeople in public places. a person has to be a real scrooge to not crack a smile when they see a random public snowman!
