I know what the solution is.
doodling.
The ritual that gets me into the work. It is surreptitious and sneaky, tricking me into liking it. Tricking me into coming up with ideas when I think there are none. Weighed down by the procrastination. If I just start doodling, then I am done. Time passes, I look up, rub my eyes and realize that the work is finished. All of the things that weighed me, the blank page, the insecurities, the crap, disappeared. And I feel great, and powerful, and light.
god i love to draw.

little moments (good things this week)...
...riding double on my bike, (one person steering the other pedalling), laughing loudly, feeling out of control but kind of liking it.
...tea time in the woods, chai with ginger cookies.
...lying on my back watching the tops of the trees, and a white feather floating for an hour.
...taking time to write in my journal again.
...wearing mitts for the first time this season (i got new stripey ones).
...clearing more clutter.
...loving.
...missing my sister Jen (sometimes missing a person is good for the heart).
...collecting leaves to scan.
...new books.
...fun jobs with cool companies.
...zip.ca.

Posted by: monicalee on October 4, 2004 10:11 AMI wish I could doodle! (Well, I try, but as a writer, I generally have to settle for doodling with words.)
When I'm writing a book and I just can't get the words to flow the way I want them to, I end up writing in point form or jotting down notes -- anything to keep the book moving forward (or backwards or sideways, for that matter). I generally find that once I have something to work with, I'm a lot more relaxed and a lot less intimidated.
Sometimes I do mental doodling in the shower when I don't even have a pen and paper within reach. In fact, I come running out of the shower, dripping wet, with five or six ideas lined up in my head, looking for something to jot them down on.
I can't figure out where all the notepads in my bedroom go. Oh yeah -- they eventually migrate down to the idea pile in my office!

Posted by: christine on September 30, 2004 06:43 PMJust wanted to say that myself, my mother and my hubby stopped in Flesherton yesterday on our way home from a lovely holiday in South Hampton. We had a quick coffee in 'Aggies'. Great cafe, and lovely village. Is it a village? Town? Hamlet? Nice place, anyway.
Posted by: patricia on September 30, 2004 02:06 PMI have one of my own good things to add! Getting your book, Living Out Loud, in the mail today from Amazon - and LOVING it!
Posted by: hope on September 30, 2004 01:59 PMI remember the days when there wasn't a single time I wouldn't have my sketchpad armed at my side ready for doodling no matter the place. Wielding it silently in the face of boredom. Especially when finding yourself in places that lack creativity.
I miss those days. I think it's time to dust off my old friend again. It WOULD help. Thanks!
Ciao~
p.s.Keep up the great doodling!
