some random jottings...
I am sitting here with a cup of orange spice tea, needing to start work. So hard today, to get into the work. I want to go out and soak up the last tiny bits of a summer that never really showed up. The sun is begging me to go and visit with the trees, to climb up a hill and get a greater view of things.
I have begun knitting a new scarf with soft orange wool on large handmade wooden needles. A gift for my husband. The needles make a lovely clicking noise as I work. How infatuated with yarn I am these days. I would like to fill my house with buckets of brightely coloured spools of the stuff.
My house has decided to rebel against me in a variety of different ways including, plumbing, washer, sewer, etc. I feel like a survivalist, ready to fight a battle against nature at any given moment, not knowing what tomorrow will bring. No toilet? Fine, I will shit in the woods. Can't drain the sink? No problem, I will wash the dishes in a bucket. As I am so often fond of saying, 'contrast is the spice of life'. One does appreciate a working toilet so much more, when one has been deprived of such things for even a few hours.
On Monday I saw the Nathan Jurevicius show at the delightful Magic Pony. I now want to obsessively create many little action figures with tiny houses, oh my. A sucker for the smell of new plastic I am, memories of X-mas's past abound.
Posted by kerismith at September 15, 2004 11:34 AMIt's amazing how resourceful you can be when you need to be. Although I think I could live without learning to appreciate my toilet (or maybe learn from the example of others..lol).
Posted by: kathryn on September 20, 2004 08:52 PMCan you believe you are typing the word "husband"?! I have been married a year and it still seems odd. It is another beautiful fall day in New England and I am about do do some digital illustration-I think I have made the mistake of putting my computer in the basement office-I can't even visit the trees through the windows! No windows! ahhhh! As for the potty-maybe you shouldn't drink the tea....

Also would like to extend my hospitality. I live minutes away in Shelburne right on highway 10. If you need to do laundry or anything at all my place is your place. But first you may have to figure out who I am? Take a drive by some time you may catch me cutting grass. hehe.
Posted by: arpy on September 17, 2004 02:34 AMI bought my first house four years ago and I haven't rested since. I hope all is well with you keri. I'd also like to add that it is indeed an inspiration to hear of your marriage. I remember you in highschool and I think you deserve good things. I enjoy your blog much and I am a guy which seems rare around here. You are a beaken of light! Thank you. And may you and your husband enjoy the rest of your lives as creative beings together. Bless You both.
Posted by: arpy on September 17, 2004 02:28 AMI didn't have a kitchen counter or sink for a week and a half. Trying to do anything in a kitchen without a counter or sink is a pain in the neck. However, I think I'd take that scenario over not having a toilet. I can't even imagine what kind of pain that is. *wink*
Posted by: Aime on September 16, 2004 05:22 PMHello Keri!
Sorry to here your plumbing is backing up and the washer isn't working either.
On the weekend's at the cabin the same thing has been going on forever, till the drain field pipes were dug up and it was found out that the pipes were broken. Think the septic needs cleaned though still. At least it works better. Just can't put paper down the toilet yet though.
I read if you put a little dishwashing liquid in the toilet over night that should unplug it. I haven't tried this though. But you just might have to get the septic cleaned. They should be cleaned every 4 years and see if the drain fields are ok. If you are on septic I wouldn't use anything that has bleach in it. If you drink coffee, throw out the grounds when finished with them. They plug up the drains and the septic too, I am told.
I was given some orange juice that the due date was way over due. I thought well maybe it would unplug the drain in the sink at the apartment and I left it for awhile and it did. Pinesol works too.
I've used a special bucket just for night time, as a potty chamber. Taken alot of hike's in the woods, if you know what I mean? Washed clothes in a different bucket and hung them on a clothes rack or line outside in the summer, when it didn't rain. I haven't had the sink's back up though at the cabin. Just have run out of water sometimes. Figured that out and what to do to unplug the block between the house and the sauna when it happens, finally. Hope everything gets cleared up and in working order for you both as soon as possible.
Love your front and back views of the robot. They are so cute. I love coming here to visit and be inspired by all that you are! Thank You so much for sharing your life with us.
Wishing you and your husband a most beautiful life together, rich with everlasting love for each other.
Warmly, Flassie
I wish I could have gone to see Nathan's work! Too bad I'm in Colorado and not Canada. I've loved his work forever.
Oh, and the robots are super cute. :)
Posted by: erika on September 16, 2004 08:10 AMLove your robot illustration. Man, you rule the school. :)
Posted by: penelope on September 15, 2004 07:25 PMY'know, now that I have a knitter in my home, I can appreciate how calming the sound of knitting can be especially in the background as I sculpt. slowly clicking and clacking the days tension away. And sure enough, the balls of yarn have made their ways into the remaining shadows adding soft color where ever needed.
Mmmmm the fresh smell of plastic...
Namaste~
I love those little action figures. A friend was recently in town and he let me pick which boxes to purchase. Luckily, I magically selected figures he didn't yet have! Such fun.
