"One of the few things I know about writing is this: spend it all, shoot it, play it, lose it, all, right away, everytime. Do not hoard what seems good for a later place in the book, or for another book; give it, give it all, give it now. The impulse to save something good for a better place later is a signal to spend it now. Something more will arise for later, something better. These things fill from behind, from beneath, like well water. Similarly, the impulse to keep to yourself what you have learned is not only shameful, it is destructive. Anything you do not give freely and abundantly is lost to you. You open your safe and find ashes." -Annie Dillard

I really enjoy this quote, especially the last bit: " Anything you do not give freely and abundantly is lost to you." It definitely speaks the truth, and I don't know how many times I've kept things from ever escaping.
Your quotes are always so reflective.
Posted by: Milford on August 26, 2004 10:22 PMGREAT quote. I fight the impulse to save and hoard so I feel safe. And it catches up with me - like when I play Canasta (cards) and get caught with a full hand. :) I'm learning.

Posted by: chlamygirl on August 26, 2004 10:26 AMthe thought of 'enough' and fighting scarcity is a constant battle for me. thank you for this reminder!
Posted by: bobbie on August 25, 2004 10:15 PMhow many times do i have a fabulous idea, but do nothing with it because "it would be perfect for this project or at that time"....far too often. i never really thought that it's perfect for now, and that something better will come. if we keep holding back at our thoughts, ideas, dreams, they are less likely to keep coming, at least not nearly as frequently. i'll definitely write down this quote and stick it on my wall to remind me of this.
