I had a lot of fun doing this tshirt design for a local charity. The event is like a mini ironman mixed with golf. The money raised is then used to send a team of people to Guatemala to build an orphanage, provide housing, school rooms, a medical clinic, love and hope for 400 orphaned and abandoned children. What i love about it is that it is truly grass roots, all of the money goes directly to the project. The people running the event are the people who are going to Guatemala to do the building. I am told the attendees are of all ages and skill levels, many challenging themselves to try something that pushes them in new ways (physical and emotional). It is true that small numbers can accomplish great change. Beautiful.

For a second there I was sure that "golf course" was going to come next.
That is a lovely design for a lovely project. :)
Posted by: Plish on July 5, 2004 02:06 AMHow could I forget? I forgot to mention below that we have 30 or so volunteers at the Quadboy who are every bit as committed to the project in Guatemala as the athletes!
Posted by: bryan on July 4, 2004 10:42 PMHi Keri,
Thanks for mentioning the Quadboy in your journal, and thanks especially for doing the artwork for us! I hope everyone knows that Keri did the artwork and much more for free (including graphics on the back of the shirt, not shown in the journal). Since a number of people asked about our project, here's a bit more info--and a tiny clarification of one point!
We gather 40-50 men and women (ages 17 to 60) to do the "quadrathlon" for one July day each year. Each participant asks friends for sponsorship beforehand. Athletic abilities vary greatly, but enthusiasm and commitment to building the orphanage are traits shared by all.
Many of us then fly to Guatemala in the winter (45 of us went down this past February, including several children) and help construct the orphanage with the money we raise.
We raised about $60,000 last year, and I think we'll raise close to $100,000 this event. The clarification? We don't fundraise to pay our travel expenses. We use every penny raised to buy building materials and to pay the local (Guatemalan) workers. So we all pay our own expenses to travel and stay--in tents--in Guatemala. That way we are able to help the 400 children as much as possible. It's an amazing project, and we're thankful that Keri--along with many others--has contributed so much.

I WANT this shirt!...is there any way to get it?
I love your illustrations - very quirky and whimsical! One of the talents I wish I had was the ability to draw.

Posted by: lisa on July 2, 2004 10:45 PMAwesome. My daughter is headed to a poverty zone in Costa Rica this summer, fulfilling a dream ten years in the making. She sent out sponsor letters to potential doners explainging the purpose of the team trip and now has over two thirds of the 1900.00 it will take to go. She is thrilled and we are very proud. I know this event will change her life.
thrive!,

Posted by: sparkmonkey on July 2, 2004 05:28 PMThank you for showing us your design, Keri! It's very inspirational and I wish that group a wonderful response for their project. What a giving spirit that group has to do this for those so much less fortunate. It would be refreshing to see something about that on the evening news! I wish them the best of blessings!
Posted by: Velvet Brick on July 2, 2004 03:54 PMKeri, I love the designs. Especially the man running in the sweater and pants. This charity project sounds like something I would love to be involved with at some point. Do they have a website where I can ask for information?
Thank you so much.
