I was in a large grocery store yesterday filling my cart with my favourite things. Some decadent items might include a passion fruit (the most magnificent shade of pink I have ever seen), Tazo tea, squid, tilapia, shiny baby eggplant, pink tulips, Tom's of Maine toothpaste (spearmint), parmigiano reggiano, cured olives, and of course, grapefruit. (No I did not find any Durian). I have a thing for grapefruit, it has become a big part of my breakfast ritual. You can't rush a grapefruit. It begs you to sit and insert a spoon into each section gracefully and patiently. If you try to rush through it you will end up frustrated or squirting yourself in the eye, (it really stings).
So I was hurriedly grabbing a couple of grapefruit and throwing them into my cart when I heard a thick Jamaican accent saying, "It's four for a dollar." I turned to see a woman smiling at me with the most beautiful large brown eyes. I stopped and said, "Oh, well, hmm. Two more can't hurt." "You cannot go wrong with grapefruit. It'll make your life betta", she exclaimed. "Yes, I know that for a fact." I replied. We exchanged a few more words on the subject of fruit. It may sound strange, but in this short exchange there was such a charge of electricity. I wanted to stand there and talk to her more about life, about food, anything actually. Something about her passion stirred something in me, connection. She looked directly into my eyes. All of this happened in the span of about a minute. All because of a mutual love for grapefruit. I smiled and thanked her, put the grapefruit in my cart and walked over to the next aisle.

any tips on eating passionfruit?
Posted by kerismith at February 23, 2004 10:32 AMpassionfruit always reminds me of this time i went to my friends house and we went swimming and then lay on the side of her pool eating passionfruit straight off the vine growing on her pool fence.
mixing it with plain yoghurt is good for breakfast, or putting it with icecream.
you mentioned durian. it made me go wot? i havent had durian for ages ..and it will be something i look forward to when i go back to malaysia (if in season). never met a canadian (or american or english or....)whos ever tried eating durians. the smell usually puts them off
Posted by: azura on February 27, 2004 12:06 PMmy eyes almost popped out of my head when i read katharine's comment. don't eat the skin of passionfruit!! cut it open and spoon out the insides. yum.
Posted by: janet on February 27, 2004 02:58 AMAfter reading this post I decided to pick up a grapefruit while doing the shopping last night. I've never eaten a grapefruit and to be honest I'm kinda nervous!
Posted by: Krissy on February 26, 2004 10:00 PMHmmm, passion fruit....I usually just cut them open and eat them. Just the mention of passion fruit takes me back to my chldhood. I grew up on an island where we could just pick passion fruit off the vine and eat them fresh...those were good times.

Posted by: Lynda on February 25, 2004 07:37 AMI want a grapefruit moment!!!! What a wonderful connection to have with a complete stranger! I'm going to go out and buy some grapefruit to enjoy with my family. Fortunately for me its one of a few fruits my kids will eat.
Posted by: Meredith on February 24, 2004 02:41 PMAngja - You might be able to get passion fruit tinned which might be cheaper... certainly I've got tins at our South African themed cafe here in Edinburgh http://www.ndebele.co.uk/reviews.htm
Posted by: m on February 24, 2004 04:43 AMNigella Lawson has several recipes with passion fruit (pomegranate, too!) - one of them is passion fruit curd (like lemon curd, only with passion fruit). I always wanted to try that one, but I haven't - mostly because I live in Scandinavia and fruit is expensive here (sadly, no passion fruit vines). I think it would be delicious on toast. And everything else.
Posted by: Anja on February 24, 2004 03:17 AMI second the Pavlova idea! It's my number one favourite summer dessert.

It's more of a summer dessert, but slice up banana and strawberries as well.
:)
Posted by: Pippa on February 23, 2004 06:58 PMThose charged meetings make me walk away wondering --what just happened there? did I miss an opportunity to make a friend?-- Maybe for two minutes they "charge" my life? The effect of them last longer than the meeting...
Sometimes, I just want to say "Wanna be friends?" to someone with an inviting face, but, sometimes, I'm chicken. They may not be thinking what I'm thinking!
Passion fruit makes good passion orange juice!
Passion fruit vines grow beautifully in my part of the world (Sydney, Australia), a friend of mine has a vine that entirely covers one side of her garage!
For me the best way to eat passionfruit is to just cut the top off and dive in with a spoon - or to slather it all over the top of a Pavlova! (A meringue base piled high with whipped cream, and then topped with fruit - yum). Make sure the passionfruit is really ripe, usually the darker and more wrinkly the better.

4 for a $? that seems expensive to me. especially when I can go out in my backyard and pick some. I have grapefruit from Dec until the end of Feb..
and oranges, mangos, guavas and papayas..
I love passionfruit which i normally eat right out of the shell. you can eat the seeds too if you wish.
Do you like pink or white grapefruit?
Posted by: Lori on February 23, 2004 03:59 PMDue to a family connection I have been fortunate to visit the Caribbean island of St. Lucia twice within the past year and I am not surprised at your feeling an instantaneous connection in meeting a lady from that part of the world. What fabulous people! And what fabulous fruit! Have you had soursop? There is a place on St. Lucia where you can get soursop gelato. Utter heaven!
Posted by: Kateri on February 23, 2004 02:42 PMI'm so embarrassed to admit that I never bothered to buy a passion fruit because I don't know what to do with it. I know I can't break it, but I just don't know what to do with it. Same with a pomegranate. One time I ventured into the unknown world of exotic melons and my throat closed up after just one bite! I realized that I was allergic to this mysterious melon. Ever since that unfortunate incident I have avoided all things exotic. Sad, isn't it.
Posted by: Kristin on February 23, 2004 02:29 PMI love grapefruit. The seeds have strong immune system building properties and the white parts are extremely high in bioflavanoids, which are extremely good for you.
Grapefruits, like many other foods, are teachers.
And they smell HEAVENLY!
Totally know what you mean when you say that you connected with her. Some people you meet, and it's like a switch goes on. Instant comfort. An electrical connection. Or perhaps a re-connection. Like old friends meeting up again after a long separation. Makes me seriously consider the possibility of past lives. Life can be so magical when you stay open and awake! So hard sometimes, but so vital.
Posted by: Donavan on February 23, 2004 02:04 PMWhoops--it was actually persimmons that I tried. Sorry for the scare! So, um, never try persimmons.
Posted by: katharine on February 23, 2004 01:10 PMEwww...passion fruit! My friends and I had a big fruit party a while back, where we tried all sorts of exotic fruits that were new to us. Someone brought passion fruit that was supposedly in season and at perfect ripeness. The skin was so thick and dry that my throat closed up and I almost asphyxiated after taking one bite. I don't know what passion fruit is supposed to taste like, but it wasn't very good!
Posted by: katharine on February 23, 2004 01:06 PMWhen I experience those occassional 'electric' meetings, I always wonder if I was meant to invite the person over for grapefruit (which I never do because I'm a shy fraidy cat). Or, if it was just that brief magical moment in time and to take it further would be pushing the river. Do you ever second guess yourself this way (or invite the person over for grapefruit)?
I was second-guessing myself about a grapefruit moment recently about a guy I bought a fridge from (from a classified ad) and POOF -- I ran right into him in a store (and this is not a small town). That was very cool.
The inclusion of squid on your list caught me off guard. Funny!
Posted by: Pioneer Melissa on February 23, 2004 11:51 AMHalf the passion fruit and eat it with a tiny spoon. Can add to vanilla ice cream, also good in cake icing!
