I think you have found your true calling when you start to do your work and then begin to feel like you are goofing off all the while. All morning I've been brainstorming for a new book. I sit surrounded by felt, kids books, paper bits, and have been surfing the web for inspiration. I've actually had to say to myself a few times, "no, you're getting paid to do this. It's allowed." I'm feeling guilty for doing my job! I've said before that I am an avid procrastinator. All along the trick was to find a way to get paid for it. I am not being smug when I say this, I think we are all able to this if we allow ourselves too. All the things that I did as a child are the basis for my career now. Do not limit your play time as an adult! Your best work comes directly from there. Have I said this already? Yes, o.k. but I feel like it's my mission, as adults we are not encouraged to play nearly enough. No, I'm not talking about "adult" kind of play (fancy cars, sex, jet skiis). I'm speaking of the old fashioned get down on the floor and colour your brains out. I don't believe that anything called "work" should have to be painful. I'll get off my soapbox now. I just wanted to remind you that you're allowed to play. And to hang your work on the fridge when you're done.
I'm off to the post office to see if I have more fun mail.

Posted by: Steph on November 8, 2003 01:00 PMFunny how I had to wait till adulthood to realize the value of the childlike spirit. I think/believe we're all trying to get back to that place thanks for encouraging us.
Posted by: naomi on November 8, 2003 12:27 PMI wanna be like you when I (don't) grow up. Hehe. Seriously, I do have a 'job' like that, but I can still manage to turn it into work and misery if I try hard enough. Thanks for the reminder! Off to play in the garden with the kids....
Posted by: Dianne on November 5, 2003 05:55 PMThanks for the inspiring post; I really needed that as often think that it is perhaps a dream that I can do what I love every day and get paid for it! Reading your words help me realise that it can become a reality!

Posted by: Joe on November 4, 2003 03:17 PMI should probably mention that I have not always felt this way with my career. It has taken a long time to get to a place where I am doing work that I want to do. In the beginning I did a LOT of work that I did not like, (and still on occasion I take on a job that is not completely enjoyable. I have to try and find something I like in those.)
I don't want to mislead people into thinking I am always blissfully working away here.

Hi Keri!
What a great entry. Thank you! I am working towards playing more often, as you probably know. I am working full time now at a job that isn't fulfilling. But when I illustrate and paint, it's just like you said: playing...being a kid! I love it. It's good to know that it feels like that for you. I look forward to the day when I can write the same thing.
Have a lovely day!

I printed out your free autumn mobile, cut and pasted and hung it in my office space the other day. It was so much fun to play like that and it's so beautiful.
And yes, I feel like I'm playing most of the time at my work, too. Some days I feel guility about it, but more and more I don't, I'm feeling like this is the way it was meant to be, just as you say here.
Keri -- I find myself feeling like this too! And sometimes it makes me feel like I have to stop doing what I'm doing, even it it's really my work -- isn't that odd??? Thanks for the constant inspiration. You should consider expanding on this as one of your monthly columns!
I too have a job I love and find myself saying "they pay me to do this?" I know how lucky I am to have this job too, there aren't many poeple out there who get paid to learn and have fun while they are doing it.
Posted by: Sally on November 4, 2003 10:08 AMI received your book 'Living Out Loud' as a gift and it is wonderful and inspiring and incredibly terrific! Congratulations on creating the life you wanted. I'm thrilled for you! (And very encouraged!)

Posted by: stef on November 4, 2003 07:18 AMdoes fun include making a " fall colors mobile" to hang high over your work desk for inspiration? if it does, i feel pretty good about my play time this week. I've had a heavy deadline hanging over my head for some time now- but now I have a lovely reminder to be lighthearted as well. what a good balance.
:)
back to work, and happy to do it.
